Discussion about Adapter Mating Cycle Life
Factors influencing the mating cycle life of threaded adapters (excluding quick-connect, bayonet, and push-on types) include:
1. Connector Self-Characteristics
For instance, the 2.4mm and 1.85mm connectors are upgraded versions of SMA.Their inherent design provides better alignment and guidance than SMA, resulting in improved inner conductor alignment, superior contact, reduced inner conductor wear, and thus a longer mating cycle life.
2. Precision and General Grade of the Connectors
Mating a precision-grade SMA adapter with a commercial-grade SMA male connector can reduce the service life of the precision adapter.
3. Design of the Female Socket (Receptacle)
Visually, for the same connector type, a female socket with a four-slot split typically offers a longer mating cycle life compared to one with a two-slot split.
4. Machining Precision of Female Socket and Male Pin
Our current machining precision for inner conductors is controlled within ±0.01mm.
5. Material and plating for the Inner Conductor
For our test grade adapters, we use beryllium copper with high fatigue resistance, plated with gold.
Previously Conducted Tests
Mating cycle life tests were performed on adapters of different series, including SMA, N, and 3.5mm, 2.92mm ,2.4mm and 1.85mm from RF ONE.
Test Requirements
- One mating and un-mating is counted as one cycle.
- After every 100 cycles, the adapter's insertion loss (IL) and VSWR were tested.
- Performance degradation was defined as: if the change exceeded: VSWR variation > 0.02 or IL variation > 0.03 dB.
Recorded Test Results
- SMA: Performance degradation began after 2000 cycles.
- N Type: Performance degradation began after 5,000 cycles.
- 3.5mm: Performance degradation began after 3,500 cycles.
- 2.92mm: Performance degradation began after 2500 cycles.
- 2.4mm: Performance degradation began after 5,000 cycles.
- 1.85mm: Performance degradation began after 5,000 cycles.
The DUT part numbers include: A6701B, A6702B, A5002B, A5001B, A4002B, A4001B, A1828B, A1829B, A1825B, A1827B, A2701B, A2702B.
In summary
The above test results are typical. Our test grade stainless steel adapters (SMA, N, 3.5mm, 2.92mm, 1.85mm, 2.4mm) meet a mating life of 2000 cycles min when used properly in laboratory environment and the correct alignment of the male pin with respect to the female contacts are followed.
